No Thoccs Q & A

What Is No Thoccs Allowed?

No Thoccs Allowed is a journal that I have chosen to write as a public document of my escapades in the world of custom mechanical keyboards.

While this is a personal journal, I hope to add knowledge to the community as I learn and grow.  I also hope to push the idea of standardizing the methods used in evaluating keyboards, switches and other items used in building these devices.

Why The Name?

No Thoccs Allowed came about because of the over-use of the word "thocc" which I found quite annoying.  As an onomatopoeia it doesn't have any inherent meaning, and if anything is more confusing than anything.

User: Does it thocc?

Me: I don't think so, if it does I'll fix it...

That's how I imagine how a conversation that uses the word "thocc" should go.

What Is The Goal of No Thoccs Allowed?

Aside from being a journal of my exploration in this world of mechanical keyboards, I do have a few goals:

  • Demystify some of parts of mechanical keyboards. The idea is to take technical information and explain it in layman's terms.
  • Try to bring a more objective, rather than subjective approach to mechanical keyboards.  There's too many reviews that are just opinion pieces that have no specific factual data to back them up. (This is a topic for a more in depth article.)
  • To find some real "bang-for-the-buck" values.  Mechanical keyboards don't have to be expensive, if you can find one that works well for your needs, and know how to mod it to make it better.
  • Explore modding keyboards at many different levels.  There are a lot of simple mods that don't require a lot of skill or knowledge to implement, and there are some that can become quite technical.  I want to explore as many of them as possible.
  • Write some more general rants about things.  I've already kind of started ranting by naming this journal "No Thoccs Allowed", and I can guarantee that's only the beginning.
I'll leave it here for now...  There are more questions that I want to add here.  If you have any that you might think are of interest, let me know.

The Obligatory...

...introductory article. Welcome to No Thoccs Allowed a journal documenting my latest hobby / interest: mechanical keyboards. Mechanical keyboards have been around for over a century.  Don't believe me?  Well consider this was my first mechanical keyboard:   While you might consider this to be something of a joke, it is quite literally true that manual typewriters, indeed the majority of typewriters (until we get to word processors in the 1980's) were mechanical devices.  And yes, I really did use an Underwood typewriter before I owned a computer.  There was also an electric typewriter, but I cannot remember the brand or the model. But, this website is about mechanical computer keyboards as a hobby.  So, I thought it would be useful to provide a condensed version of my history with mechanical keyboards. My History I've been using mechanical computer keyboards since I was in high school.  Throughout the years I have encountered or used quite a few mechanical keyboards incl
